Dauphin Island on a Cold, Windy and Dreary Day

The weather conditions for this family session at Dauphin Island were just about the worst you could get for a beach session. It was very windy so I arrived about 45 minutes early to find a protected area guarded by tall sand dunes on the East side of the island. The skies were overcast so there wasn’t any color on the beach. It was also cold. When I arrived I discussed options with the family about another day or even cancelling the session. Being as they were from Michigan by way of Texas the cold weather didn’t bother them. They had no other days available as this was the last day they would all be together. This session had to happen.

They understood the limitations and conditions. These are perfect conditions for portable studio lighting. We embraced the dramatic conditions and doubled down. The lights gave the portraits some depth and color. While the conditions were dreary at the beach, the mood during the session was definitely bright and energetic!
