Stormy Weather Family Beach Portraits at Dauphin Island

This multi-family session at Dauphin Island required some flexibility and compromises. The day the session was scheduled for this repeat client featured thunderstorms and high winds at sunset. If it wasn’t raining it was really clear during the afternoon which is also not great for family beach portraits as the sun just too bright. Added to the weather problems we only had two days the whole family would be together so we had limited options on when we could shoot.

We decided to reschedule the session the next morning and that presented some challenges as well. Sunrise was out because it would look too gloomy. Forecast called for partly cloudy skies around 9 am so that was the target time as one family unit needed to leave right after the portraits. It was still very windy but the family was staying on the bayside of Dauphin Island so the beach house blocked some of the southernly winds. With the partly cloudy skies the lighting was continually changing and fortunately it didn’t get too bright. These were not ideal conditions but we made it happen.
